Elementary School children need to be exposed to a wide range of vocabulary. The new Common Core learning standards stress the importance of using “general academic and domain-specific words and phrases.” Also known as Tier 3 words, this type of vocabulary might not be used in everyday conversation, but it is necessary that children know a large variety of words and when to use them appropriately.
