Raising of the Flag at Iwojima
On this day in 1945, five U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman raised a flag atop Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima. Three of those men - Harlon Block, Franklin Sousley, and Michael Strank - were killed in action over the next few days.
